Hydra: A place of true escapism

Hydra, Greece | Modestie Magazine

A tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of Athens, Hydra sits a boat ride away in the Aegean Sea. Having been an spot of intrigue throughout the years in film and television, most recently in Daisy Jones and the Six, we ventured out to get us some tranquility on this beautiful island.

One thing to note is to try and go off season as Hydra can be quite a touristic hotspot at times with cruise ships coming in and out of the Island's port. Regardless, as you venture into the island and up the cobble steps, there's nothing but peace and the echos of birds.

We started off by exploring each of the peak points to fully take in the breathtaking sceneries across the sea, which mind you was quite a bit of exercise that was worth it.

After exploring we stumbled across a quaint restaurant opposite Paradosiako serving traditional greek specialities such as steamed sea bass, souvlakis and tirokafteri (a delicious feta cheese dip). We loved it all!

The area had a few tavernas around so you won't find it hard to find great food but we particularly liked the freshness and hidden aspect of this nook, the seating was situated on a corner so we were seated down the side in a beautiful little walkway with much needed shade from the luscious hanging flower trees nearby.

After a much needed rest, we then took a stroll along the sea walk, which winded around the island, transporting us through small beaches eye catching views and even a few small shops selling handmade goods from across the island.

Scattered around are seating areas and even seaside restaurants to unwind for the day before heading back to Athens. Although there was not much to do on Hydra that was the charm of the place with no cars, where you can take a step back, relax and just be and enjoy the little things in life that we often overlook with itineraries and plans.
